The communities of Keara and Puina are home to remnant stands of Polylepis pepei that harbor one of the rarest birds in Bolivia, the Royal Cinclodes, with perhaps as few as 50 individuals. These small forests are located in the exquisite Bolivian cordillera near the Peruvian border and within the large Apolobamba and Madidi national protected between 10,000 and 14,000 feet. For those birders who need this species, most will venture to Peru where it is reliable and easily accessible from Cuzco. This site is for people who want to mix birding with trekking.

Besides the furtive Royal Cinclodes, other high altitude specialties like the Ash-breasted Tit-tyrant are present.

Local communities are now using improved wood-burning stoves and have planted 10,000 saplings to reduce pressure on the surrounding Polylepis forests.

Two rustic field stations are available to hearty travelers looking for high-altitude adventure in an extremely remote location. Accommodations include bunk beds or optional campground, outhouse, and a full self-serve kitchen. Known as a site for trekking and mountaineering, this site offers challenge and beauty for intrepid souls.
